Special teams coach is fired Read's units struggled in his two seasons
The first major change of the Cowboys' off-season occurred Wednesday, when the team fired special teams coach Bruce Read.

In Read's two seasons with the Cowboys, his units struggled. At one point this season, coach Wade Phillips had some position coaches help Read in meetings and on the field.

Read did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Sources said the team is interested in Jacksonville special teams coach Joe DeCamillis, who coached with Phillips when Phillips was defensive coordinator at Denver and Atlanta.

DeCamillis, whose two-year contract with the Jaguars ended after the season, was not available for comment. He has 20 years of NFL coaching experience.

Teams cannot speak with assistant coaches until 10 days after the regular season.

Kevin O'Dea is another possibility. O'Dea was supposed to be the Jets special teams coordinator this season, but Mike Westhoff came out of retirement, and O'Dea became his assistant.

What might have marked the ending for Read with the Cowboys occurred Oct. 12 at Arizona.

The Cardinals' J.J. Arrington returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. The game ended when Monty Beisel recovered a blocked punt for the winning touchdown in overtime. It was the first time in NFL history a game started on a kickoff return for a score and ended with a blocked punt for a touchdown.

Punter Mat McBriar suffered a fractured foot on the blocked punt and was lost for the season.

"The punt block was just inexplicable to me," Phillips said at the time. "You always block the same guy every time."

The Cowboys were the only team in the league without a touchback this season. Kicker Nick Folk led the league in out-of-bounds kickoffs with five, including one to start Sunday's loss to the Eagles.

Read wanted Folk to kick the ball to certain areas of the field instead of booming it toward the end zone. Read also juggled lineups and formations that appeared to lead to the special teams' inconsistency.

The Cowboys finished 29th in kickoffs and 20th as a kick return unit in the NFL.

Read's units suffered several key injuries, including Patrick Watkins, Keith Davis and Bobby Carpenter.

Briefly: The Detroit Lions have not scheduled a date to interview offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. On Monday, the Lions received permission to interview Garrett for their head coach vacancy. ... Wide receiver Travis Wilson signed a contract with the Cowboys on Wednesday. Wilson was signed to the practice squad Oct. 1.
