The Lions have signed quarterback Daunte Culpepper and could start him immediately. Dan Orlovsky has an injured thumb, and Drew Stanton is not ready to play, according to offensive coordinator Jim Colletto.
Andy McCollum likely will start at center because Dominic Raiola has a broken thumb. That means the Lions could have a new center and new quarterback Sunday against Jacksonville.
PLAYER NOTES
--DT Chuck Darby (calf) did not practice Wednesday but practiced fully Thursday.
--FB Jerome Felton (ankle) did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. He seems unlikely to play Sunday. He has missed one game.
--TE Casey Fitzsimmons (ribs) did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. He is uncertain for Sunday. He has missed one game.
--QB Dan Orlovsky (hand) did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. He was flying back from New York, where he saw a specialist Thursday, and the Lions provided no update. He reportedly will miss at least a few weeks.
--C Dominic Raiola (hand) did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. He is doubtful for Sunday. He didn't rule himself out, but he has a broken thumb on his snapping hand.
--DT Cory Redding (groin) did not practice Wednesday but was limited Thursday. He is expected to play. It is a nagging injury.
--LB Ernie Sims (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday but was limited Thursday. He is expected to play. Coach Rod Marinelli described him as sore.
--S Dwight Smith (foot) did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. He seems doubtful for Sunday. He has missed two games.
--LB Jordon Dizon (hamstring) was limited Wednesday and practiced fully Thursday, after missing two games. He might play some on the strong side.
--TE John Owens (hamstring) was limited Wednesday and Thursday but is expected to be available.
GAME PLAN: Run the ball, stop the run. If Daunte Culpepper starts at quarterback, the Lions are going to have to keep it simple and support him with a strong running game. They cannot expect him to come in, practice for three days and light it up through the air. The Jaguars are known as a rushing team. They have not run it as well as usual this season. The Lions need to stuff them to have a chance.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Lions QB Daunte Culpepper vs. Jaguars' pass defense -- Culpepper has had less than a week to prepare since coming out of retirement, but he could start. Dan Orlovsky has an injured thumb, and Drew Stanton isn't ready to play, according to offensive coordinator Jim Colletto. Culpepper's adjustment is made easier by the fact the Lions use a similar system to the one Culpepper once ran so well in Minnesota. The Jaguars rank 21st against the pass.
Lions RB Kevin Smith vs. Jaguars' run defense: Like Culpepper, Smith is a Central Florida product and will have a huge impact on the game. If Culpepper starts, the Lions will need to keep things simple and support him with a strong running game. The Lions have struggled to run the ball well this year, but the Jags aren't great against the run. They rank 20th.
INJURY IMPACT: The Lions could have a new starting quarterback and new starting center if Dan Orlovsky (thumb) and Dominic Raiola (thumb) can't play. Daunte Culpepper would take over at quarterback; he obviously is limited by the fact he has been a Lion for less than a week. Andy McCollum would take over at center; he has a broken finger on his left hand. If Ernie Sims (shoulder) cannot play weak side linebacker, Alex Lewis could start there.
