PLAYER NOTES
--QB Dan Orlovsky entered Sunday's game at San Francisco after Jon Kitna suffered a knee injury. He threw an interception on his first play.
--LB Ryan Nece, whom the Lions signed after he was cut by Tampa Bay, rotated in for Alex Lewis on the strong side. Nece knows all three positions in the Tampa Two.
--LB Jordon Dizon, the Lions' second-round pick this year, was inactive against San Francisco. He had a neck injury, but the Lions also might have been concerned about his ability to make the calls against a 49ers offense that uses a lot of shifts and motions.
--WR Roy Williams, who complained he didn't get enough passes thrown his way last week, caught only two passes for 18 yards. He has only eight catches this season.
--RT George Foster, who started the Lions' first two games, was the only player who dressed Sunday but did not participate.
REPORT CARD VS. 49ERS
PASSING OFFENSE: F -- Quarterback Jon Kitna completed only 50 percent of his passes and was sacked four times. He went 15-for-30 for 146 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Star wide receivers Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams combined for only six catches for 58 yards.
RUSHING OFFENSE: C -- The Lions actually averaged 5.8 yards per carry. Rookie Kevin Smith started and had three carries for 14 yards, but veteran Rudi Johnson took over and had 14 carries for 83 yards. The Lions didn't run the ball well enough, though, to get the 49ers to bring a safety into the box and open up the passing game.
PASS DEFENSE: F -- Kitna took 114 sacks in two years under Mike Martz. J.T. O'Sullivan took 12 sacks over his first two games. But the Lions managed only one measly sack. O'Sullivan wasn't good enough for the Lions to bring him back after last season, but he was good enough to elude the rush, with eight carries for 32 yards, and finish 16-for-23 for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
RUSH DEFENSE: F -- The 49ers did what the Lions want to do. They took a lead, then ran the ball and controlled the clock. Running back Frank Gore carried 27 times for 130 yards.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C -- Poor kickoff returns gave the Lions bad field position early, and the 49ers took advantage of it. (When Brandon Middleton finally broke a 42-yard kickoff return and started the Lions at their 47, they went three-and-out.) Jason Hanson hit 44- and 51-yard field goals. Nick Harris had two punts downed inside the 20.
COACHING: F -- The Lions are simply not doing the things coach Rod Marinelli preaches. Their fundamentals are poor, from penalties to tackling. Marinelli says the Lions are preparing well, but they aren't taking the preparation into the games. Then they are preparing very well, then, are they?
