Blocking TE available
Apr. 30, 2009 (Morning Call delivered by Newstex ) --

The Eagles have another opportunity to address their tight end situation.

The Lions have released 6-4, 277-pound Michael Gaines, a five-year veteran (Carolina, Buffalo, Detroit), after selecting two tight ends in the draft.

Gaines caught 23 passes for the Lions this past season (but notably fumbled two away) after catching a career-high 25 in 2007 with Buffalo. He is primarily known as a blocker.

The Eagles drafted Florida?TE Cornelius Ingram in?the fifth round of the past weekend's draft. They also have Brent Celek -- who had 10 catches in the NFC Championship Game -- and veteran backup Matt Schobel on the roster.

But a 6-4, 277-pound tight ought to get a look.

** Looking ahead

The Eagles will have 11 picks in next season's draft: one first-rounder, one second-rounder, two thirds, a fourth, two fifths, two sixths, a seventh, and a TBD pick from the Jets from the Lito Sheppard trade.

** What's Donovan thinking?

We don't have to wait until this weekend's minicamp to find out.

McNabb shared these thoughts earlier this week on his blog at yardbarker.com:

"As with every minicamp since I've been in the league, I'm excited about meeting my new teammates, getting to know them and working together on the field. We now have a lot of new, young skill position players and it will be exciting and interesting to see how they become acclimated to what we do here. If they can come in here and take their game to the next level, they will be productive pros and we can achieve great successes together. I want to welcome the new rookies and am excited to get to work with them.

"I haven't taken the time yet to welcome some of the veteran free agents to the team. I'm looking forward to working with a new set of bookends on the o-line. Stacey Andrews and Jason Peters?are young, athletic and physical. They will help in both the passing and running game. The same can be said for fullbak Leonard Baker.?As for the additions on defense -- Ellis Hobbs, Rashad Baker and Sean Jones -- I can't wait to see how Jim Johnson uses all the talent he has at his disposal.

"I want to congratulate all the newcomers and let them know that I am excited to be working with them and taking the first step towards moving forward and getting something accomplished."

** Eagles beat Giants?

The Newark Star-Ledger's Mike Garafalo reported the Giants were poised to move up and draft Jeremy Maclin at No. 20, but the Eagles beat them with their leapfrog from 21 to 19.
