Maybe Daunte Culpepper + Scott Linehan = Lions Not Completely Awful

Sort of: maybe the Lions should hire Scott Linehan as offensive coordinator now that Daunte Culpepper is now the team’s franchise quarterback.* From the Friday edition of the , courtesy of Nicholas J. Cotsonika: Linehan was a poor head coach. But he spent three seasons as Culpepper’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Minnesota. In those three years, the Vikings’ offense ranked second, first and fourth in the NFL. In 2003, Culpepper’s passer rating was 110.9, the fifth-highest in NFL history. Obviously, Randy Moss had something to do with Culpepper’s jaw-dropping numbers, but prior to imploding in St. Louis, Linehan was considered a hot head coaching prospect because of his success as an assistant. (Of course, so were Mike Mularkey and Cam Cameron, and those experiments also ended badly.)

But since it’s clear Linehan won’t be getting another shot at a head-coaching gig anytime soon, and presuming that he’s still able to effectively coordinate an offense, bringing him to Detroit isn’t a completely insane idea.Continue Reading
